About Paddle Across The Bay

Be a part of Australia’s largest ever Stand Up Paddle event – a record breaking event in fact!

This is a Stand Up Paddle event travelling from Brighton Beach to Port Melbourne – a 10 kilometre, 1.5 to 2 hour journey across our beautiful Port Phillip Bay.

Paddle Across The Bay (PATB) is designed for everyone to join. All you need is a paddle, a SUP board and the passion to make a difference and help end cancer. If you don’t have a SUP board, we can put you in touch with our local experts who will also give you the best advice and training tips. The event will be held on Saturday, 4 February 2017 and spaces are limited to 200 participants.

We encourage participants to train in groups and will often coordinate training sessions through local shops and SUP schools. Be sure to follow Across The Bay Events on Facebook and receive notifications on training sessions and updates of the event.

Will participants be travelling in groups?

With the purpose of working together as a community it is encouraged for participants to establish Buddy Groups. This allows for all participants to support each other throughout the event. The Buddy Groups are:

  • 3-5 participants to agree to undertake the event together and support each other.
  • Participants are responsible for creating their Buddy Groups and sticking together throughout the event.

Benefits of the Buddy Group System are:

  • If one of your group needs help, you all wait together for boat support or go to the beach together if close enough
  • If one of your group needs help and another needs to go for help (on water or land), there is still a buddy available to stay with the friend in need of help
  • Moral support for your group to assist others to complete the event and contribute to the community atmosphere.

The Buddy Groups are the responsibility of participants to work together as a team to complete the event.

No problem. Others will be in the same situation and there will be a few opportunities to arrange a buddy at weekly training events. Follow us on Facebook for more information. Alternatively get your friends or family involved as well.

  • Water (hydration backpack is recommended)
  • A least one member of your Buddy Group should carry a mobile phone
  • A MyKi Card (for public transportation if required)
  • Some money should you require to land prior to reaching Port Melbourne

Yes, as per water safety regulations all participants will need to have a Grade 1 PFD. Participants are also strongly encouraged to have a leg rope to attach to their boards.

Safety is the number one priority for Paddle Across the By. Information is currently available on the website. Updates will be provided regularly via our Facebook page, website and e-newsletters.  A final safety brief will occur on the day of the event to reiterate safety points and to confirm conditions, everyone’s buddy system and the course outline.

Yes please! The event is dependant on dedicated volunteers to assist with various activities on the day. Just complete the form on our Contact Us page for more information about Volunteering.

If you sadly can’t make it on the day for whatever reason, your funds will still support Cancer Council Victoria in their fantastic work – and we will hope you will be able to make it the following year. Also don’t forget to get in touch after the event so that we can give you your event lycra top.

Sadly the registration fee is non-refundable – you will still be able to claim your lycra top and you will have a place in the event on its contingency date.
The majority of the costs that your Registration Fee covers will be invested in advance, regardless of wind. All funds raised will still go to Cancer Council Victoria.

Event participants are responsible for planning their transportation from the finish line at Port Melbourne. Event organisers encourage participants to arrange for friends or family to drop them off at the start line and meet them at the finish line. Activities such as beach yoga and SUP demo’s will be at the finish line, bring a picnic and make a day of it!

The amazing thing about Paddle Across the Bay is the community of people coming together to experience an adventure and contribute to the positive impact to the lives of others. With 1 in 3 Australian’s impacted by cancer events like Paddle Across the Bay are important to continue to raise critical funds for organisations like Cancer Council Victoria.
